Staying Fit. Mind and Body.

After having a baby a month and a half ago, I am starting to realize how important it is to keep myself fit. I don't just mean physically but keeping a fit mind as well. This applies to all of us, not just those of us in a postpartum state. I have been advised by doctors to not let myself get depressed, since becoming a new mom is somewhat of a challenge. So, I am doing my best to keep myself going and doing things that make me feel good about myself. I am making sure to work out my mind and body to keep myself going each day.

Staying Physically Fit

When we think of staying physically fit we think of hard core workouts that leave us totally exhausted and never wanting to work out again. And therefore we never even want to start working out. There are different types of work outs for every body. If you are into the hard core workouts then go for it, but if you are looking for something less straining on your body then I would suggest doing some mild strength training with some hand weights or going for a walk each day. I love to do Pilates and yoga. It keeps me flexible and strengthens my muscles slowly enough that I don't feel like I am in so much pain the next day that I can't do it anymore.

When we get into a routine it helps our moods to stay up and helps us to get going each day. I have been through phases where I work out regularly and then stop for a while. The differences between the two phases is huge. I notice that when I keep up my workouts on a steady basis, that I am more happy and can jump right out of bed. When I completely stop working out, I find myself staying in bed til 11 am and watching Netflix on my phone. It gets so hard to do anything.

Just like exercising is important so is eating right. I am not saying that you have to eat fruits and veggies all day long, but I would suggest finding ways to squeeze them into your daily meals. Like for breakfast throw some fresh fruit into your cereal or oatmeal. For lunch, instead of having chips with your sandwich, eat some carrot sticks. For dinner, make a yummy pasta and throw in some squash or have a salad. It isn't too hard. Eating a little better each day will help fuel your body up for that bit of exercise you do.

Keeping Our Minds Fit

Keeping our minds fit can be as easy as turning off the TV for an hour or two and reading a book, writing in a journal, or starting a blog. There are many ways we can keep our minds active and working through the day. Its great to have some peace and quiet and just ponder. Let our minds work in a peaceful environment. Sometimes that is hard to do. Especially if we have kids or a very busy job. But if we take some time to work out our brain it will help keep us a little more sane.

Start a project that takes a little bit of thought and keep working on it every day until it is time to start a new one. For me, I love working on my blog because it keeps me thinking about the many different posts I can do each week. I am also writing a column for a local newspaper and writing a small Ebook. I like to stay busy so I feel productive. Keeping busy will help with your mood as well. Don't over do it though. Just like it is important to stay fit in every aspect, it is also important to have fun as well!

Here is a fun website to keep your mind fit and focused.
