DIY Children's bank from a formula can!

I realized that I have not done a DIY project for a while. So, here is one! I am finding that I have so many empty cans from powdered formula. (I never throw anything away) I thought it would be fun to see what all I could make with these. So for this post I decided to pick one idea and show you how I made it.

My son has accumulated a bit of money since he was born and it has been laying around the house with no place to go. I thought it would be fun to make a cute little tin can bank with the materials I had around my house.

What you will need:
razor blade
scrap booking paper
hot glue gun
empty formula can
your choice of paint
paint brush

How to Make:
You will first want to take the paper of your choice and cut it to fit the circumference of the formula can. I used a ruler to measure the height and then drew lines as a guide to cut along.

It's kind of hard to see but I have a dotted line for my guide.
I then cut along my guide line and made sure it fit height-wise on the can. It was perfect! I then carefully glued the paper around the can. Make sure it is snug to each edge of the top and bottom of the can.

As I was gluing it I found that the paper was not long enough to fit all the way around the can. So I had to improvise... I didn't do a very good job! But it works!

The next step will be to paint the lid. Before you do this take the razor blade and cut a small rectangle on the lid to slip the money through. Pick your choice of paint color and do at least two layers of paint on the lid.

Allow the paint to dry and you are done! I thought this turned out so cute. I might make a few of these to keep for my kids. It might be a good idea to have a different little bank for different categories. Ex: save for school, save for a toy, or save for something fun. There are many options. Ask them and you might be surprised what they come up with. It would be a good way to teach your children how to save money.

Questions for YOU!
What else could you use a formula can for? Have you ever made a piggy bank? What did you use for the bank?
